Fromm
Fromm Winery is a Marlborough estate built on integrity, organics, and the belief that wine should be an unfiltered expression of place. Established in the early 1990s by Swiss vintner Georg Fromm and winemaker Hätsch Kalberer, Fromm has long stood apart from the region’s mainstream — quietly focused on terroir, texture, and longevity while others chased aromatic impact. Today, Fromm continues to produce some of New Zealand’s most soulful wines, driven by vineyard detail and crafted with European calm.
The estate is based in the Brancott Valley, with additional vineyards in Wairau and Awatere, all certified organic and dry-farmed. Pinot Noir is the spiritual centrepiece, with multiple single-vineyard expressions — including Clayvin, Churton, and Fromm Vineyard — each articulating a different facet of Marlborough’s subregional complexity. Other key varietals include Syrah, Malbec, Chardonnay, Riesling, and Gewürztraminer, all farmed and vinified with the same quiet attention to detail.
In the winery, the approach is minimal-intervention and deeply instinctual. Fermentations are spontaneous, sulphur is used sparingly, and nothing is fined or filtered. Pinot Noir is handled with gentle extraction, partial whole bunch, and long, slow ageing in seasoned French oak. Whites are whole-bunch pressed, aged on lees, and released with subtle depth rather than surface brightness. The goal is not volume or aromatic punch, but harmony, earth, and grace.
The wines are savoury, layered, and textural. Pinot Noir is fine-boned and serious — red fruit, wild herb, forest floor, and a quiet mineral thread that speaks less of Marlborough exuberance and more of site clarity. Syrah is peppery and elegant, while Malbec shows lifted florals and graphite precision. Riesling is taut and dry, with lime peel and stony persistence. Across the range, the wines offer purity without adornment — a natural elegance born from vine and soil, not cellar artifice.
What defines Fromm is its restraint — a producer that listens before it speaks, crafting wines not to perform, but to last.
These are wines that settle in, rather than stand out — shaped by time, earth, and the kind of quiet conviction that never needs to raise its voice.
