Saldo Wines is a California project with a bold voice and a clear intent: to celebrate the strength and character of Zinfandel — and its kindred varietals — from across the Golden State. Created by The Prisoner Wine Company, Saldo was originally launched as a single-label Zinfandel bottling, built from a network of exceptional vineyards rather than a single estate. Over time, it has grown into its own identity — a portfolio driven by ripe fruit, fine polish, and the art of sourcing, blending, and balance.
The name Saldo, Latin for “I join” or “I bring together,” reflects the brand’s philosophy: curating the best lots from California’s top Zinfandel sites across Sonoma, Napa, Amador, Paso Robles, and beyond. Vineyard partners are chosen for their old vines, sustainable practices, and regional character. The wines are not bound to a specific AVA — instead, they’re shaped by the freedom to blend across terroirs in pursuit of style and consistency.
In the winery, the approach is modern and exacting. Fermentation is clean and controlled, with careful maceration to build color and mid-palate richness. Ageing takes place in a mix of French and American oak, new and seasoned, to frame the wine with texture, warmth, and spice. Winemaking choices are driven by structure and generosity — built for immediate pleasure, but with enough backbone to linger.
The wines are plush, dark-fruited, and unmistakably Californian. Zinfandel is the cornerstone — brambly, rich, and textured, with blackberry compote, black pepper, and cocoa — layered and smooth, yet lifted by just enough acid to hold its shape.
