Chateau Gruaud Larose
Château Gruaud Larose is a name steeped in the grandeur of Saint-Julien — a Second Growth whose identity is as much about legacy as it is about the land. Founded in the 18th century and unified under the Gruaud name in 1757, the estate has long held to its guiding motto: “Le vin des rois, le roi des vins” — the wine of kings, the king of wines. Today, Gruaud Larose remains true to that noble sentiment, producing wines of regal stature and expressive soul, with a deeply rooted commitment to sustainability and tradition.
The vineyard stretches across 82 hectares in a single, contiguous block — a rare and fortunate configuration in the Médoc. The soils are a classic mix of deep gravel over clay, offering natural drainage and thermal regulation ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon, which forms the backbone of the blend. Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot round out the plantings. The estate has adopted organic farming and biodynamic principles, emphasizing biodiversity, soil vitality, and minimal intervention. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel and concrete vats, followed by ageing in French oak barrels, a significant portion of which are new.
Gruaud Larose’s wine is unmistakably Left Bank — structured, layered, and built to evolve. Cabernet Sauvignon delivers depth, graphite, and tension, while Merlot brings roundness, dark fruit, and spice. The result is a wine of deep color and classical silhouette, with aromas of cassis, cigar box, earth, and crushed violets. The tannins are firm but noble, the finish long and composed. Over time, the wine gains complexity and harmony, revealing truffle, leather, and forest floor beneath its powerful frame.
What distinguishes Château Gruaud Larose is its sense of permanence — a style that resists fashion and speaks instead to lineage, place, and the quiet passage of time. Under the current stewardship of the Merlaut family, the estate continues to evolve with care, investing in sustainability, transparency, and the patient refinement of a historic terroir.
Château Gruaud Larose is for those who seek Bordeaux with depth and dignity — wines that wear their heritage with grace and are crafted not for the moment, but for the decades. It is a Saint-Julien of resonance and restraint, where every vintage adds a chapter to a long, noble story.
