Collection: Sheild Wines

Sheild Wines is a small, site-driven project from Central Otago, defined by purity, altitude, and a deeply personal approach to winemaking. Named after the Sheild family, who have farmed the land for generations, the label reflects a quiet confidence in place — wines crafted not for scale or statement, but for texture, clarity, and a long view of the land they come from.

The vineyards are located in Bannockburn, one of Central Otago’s most celebrated subregions, where glacial soils and dramatic diurnal shifts yield fruit of tension, concentration, and natural balance. Pinot Noir leads the charge, supported by limited volumes of Riesling and other cool-climate varietals. The farming is low-intervention and increasingly regenerative, with careful pruning, cover cropping, and a focus on vine health over yield.

Winemaking is thoughtful and restrained. Small-batch fermentations, wild yeasts, and gentle extraction allow each vintage to reflect its own rhythm. Pinot Noir sees partial whole bunch, extended maceration, and ageing in older French oak for subtle texture and grounding. Whites are fermented slowly, with time on lees and minimal handling to build breadth without compromising precision.

The wines are textured and composed. Pinot Noir shows red cherry, fine spice, crushed herb, and a gentle earthiness — structured yet lifted, with a long, mineral line. Riesling is taut and citrus-driven, often with a whisper of residual sugar to balance its natural acidity. There’s a through-line of clarity across the range: wines that feel rooted, restrained, and quietly assured.
