Te Whare Ra
Te Whare Ra — “the house in the sun” — is a small, family-run estate in Marlborough where precision, heritage, and deep-rooted stewardship define every bottle. Situated in the Wairau Valley, this organically certified vineyard and winery is owned and operated by Anna and Jason Flowerday, whose backgrounds in both Old and New World viticulture have shaped a thoughtful, holistic approach to one of New Zealand’s most dynamic wine regions. Their vision is clear: to craft wines with purity, vitality, and a profound sense of place.
The 11-hectare estate vineyard, originally planted in 1979, is one of the oldest in Marlborough. These mature vines — dry-farmed and deeply rooted in clay and gravel soils — yield naturally balanced fruit with concentration and nuance. The site is certified organic and farmed biodynamically, with regenerative practices at its core: composting, cover cropping, minimal inputs, and a deep respect for biodiversity. Every vine is hand-tended, and harvesting is done by taste, block by block.
In the cellar, the philosophy is low-intervention, with an emphasis on letting the vineyard speak. Fermentations are spontaneous, with extensive lees contact and long, slow ageing for both whites and reds. A wide array of varietals is crafted with equal care — from Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Riesling, to Gewürztraminer, Grüner Veltliner, and Chardonnay — each handled in small lots, with tailored élevage in stainless steel, old oak, or amphora.
The wines are luminous and layered. Riesling is taut, lime-zested, and delicately off-dry; Gewürztraminer is textural, lifted, and beautifully varietal. Grüner brings white pepper and salinity, while Pinot Noir is finely structured, red-fruited, and quietly powerful. Across the range, there is restraint, definition, and a signature that leans more toward detail than volume. These are wines made with care at every step — honest, expressive, and composed.
What defines Te Whare Ra is its deep integration of place and people — wines not just made on the land, but in partnership with it.
These are wines that unfold gently, shaped by hand, soil, and season — held together not by intervention, but by trust.
