WINE FUTURES BY NORMANBY FINE WINES

Ulysses

Collection: Ulysses

Ulysses is a wine of focus and depth, born from a singular place on Napa Valley’s western benchlands. Located just north of Oakville in the Yountville AVA, the estate was acquired in 2008 by Christian Moueix — best known for his work at Château Trotanoy and Dominus — and has since become a study in restraint, structure, and timeless Napa character. Named after the Greek hero of long journeys and quiet strength, Ulysses reflects that ethos: an estate of few words, deep roots, and enduring clarity.

The 33-hectare vineyard rests on well-drained alluvial soils composed of gravel, silt, and clay, offering Cabernet Sauvignon the structure and mineral tension for which the benchlands are known. The site benefits from the marine influence of the nearby San Pablo Bay, extending ripening and preserving freshness. Farming is organic and meticulous, with a belief in minimal interference and the slow stewardship of vine and soil. Each block is managed individually, allowing the natural diversity of the site to inform each year’s final composition.

In the cellar, the approach is one of calm precision. Fermentations are carried out with native yeasts in concrete and stainless steel vats, followed by ageing in French oak barrels, around 40% new. Extraction is gentle, aging is patient, and the wines are bottled without fining or filtration. The result is not a stylized interpretation of Napa, but an elemental one — shaped by earth, time, and intention.

The wine is composed and architectural. Cabernet Sauvignon forms the spine, offering cassis, graphite, and gravelly texture. Small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot introduce lift, spice, and herbal nuance. The tannins are firm but filigreed, the fruit restrained and luminous, and the finish long, dry, and mineral. There is no excess, no gloss — only proportion and depth. Ulysses opens slowly, reveals gradually, and rewards patience with resonance.

What defines Ulysses is its discipline — a belief that greatness lies in precision, not power. It is a wine built not to impress quickly, but to endure quietly.

Like its namesake, it moves not in haste, but in purpose — a long journey rendered in stillness, depth, and light.
