Chateau Durfort-Vivens
Château Durfort-Vivens sits quietly in the heart of Margaux, its reputation steadily ascending over the past two decades thanks to a deep commitment to purity, place, and biodiversity. Classified as a Second Growth in 1855, the estate remained somewhat under the radar until Gonzague Lurton took over in the 1990s. Since then, Durfort-Vivens has undergone a thoughtful transformation — not loud, but resolute — emerging as one of the most compelling voices in modern Margaux.
The vineyard covers around 62 hectares, with gravel-rich soils that define the appellation’s elegance. Cabernet Sauvignon forms the backbone of the vineyard, supported by Merlot and a small amount of Cabernet Franc. Farming has moved beyond sustainability to full biodynamic certification, making Durfort-Vivens one of the pioneers of ecological viticulture in the Médoc. Every aspect of vineyard life — from soil health to vine balance to lunar rhythms — is carefully considered. In the cellar, gentle extraction, native yeasts, amphorae, and minimal oak usage reveal a philosophy rooted in transparency rather than intervention.
The wine itself is unmistakably Margaux in tone but feels contemporary in texture — light on its feet, yet detailed and expressive. Cabernet lends structure, clarity, and a cool graphite core, while Merlot adds roundness and quiet charm. The aromatics lean toward red and blue fruit — currant, violet, wet stone, and tea leaf — with subtle floral lift and savory spice. The tannins are fine-grained and integrated, giving the wine a tactile delicacy that lingers rather than asserts. With air and age, the wine opens into something more layered, but always with restraint.
What sets Durfort-Vivens apart today is not power, but philosophy. It is a château defined by its belief that great wine comes not just from terroir, but from balance — between nature and nurture, energy and structure, place and time. Gonzague Lurton’s quiet, biodynamic revolution has not only revitalized the estate, but reframed what Margaux can be in the 21st century.
Château Durfort-Vivens is for those who seek elegance with edge — wines that are clear, alive, and uncompromising in their authenticity. A Second Growth in classification, but increasingly First in intent, it offers a Margaux that is both rooted and evolving, with grace drawn directly from the ground.
